10.18.2017 & 10.25.2017 Rotempary
Meeting of 10.18.2017:
19 members, frequent visiting Rotarian Mike Neeley of the New Brighton-Shoreview club, and guest Lacie Anderson, director of the recently-opened Talecris Plasma Resources facility in Fridley attended the breakfast on October 18, and heard Rotary member Patty Halvorson, director of the Bridgeview drop-in center program at the Lee Carlson Center for Mental Health and Well-Being  and Bridgeview member Maria Davis describe the program's services and benefits. The program serves 575 members, ages 18 to 85. The center is holding its Music for the Mind fundraiser on Oct. 19. The Rotary club has purchased a table, and is holding an Open House on Monday, Oct. 23.
 
Announcements:
  • Two service activities were being conducted today: Loading bikes at the City of Fridley Police Department for the Bikes for Kids program, and distribution of dictionaries to 3rd grade students in Columbia Heights.
  • Peggy Flathmann reported that the Fridiey Schools Foundation's walkathon fundraiser was successful. The Foundation will hold a fundraiser on January 25 at the Banquet Center in Fridley, called the Black & Gold Gala.
  • President Wally Wysopal summarized the board meeting of October 4, 
  • STRIVE co-chair Zac Hoang reported that six Fridley students attended the program kickoff at Fridley last week. Columbia Heights will hold its kickoff on Oct. 25.
Meeting of 10.25.2017:
19 members, former Rotarian Casey Mahon, exchange student Pascal Bohner, and guest (of member Mike Hillukka) Greg Schrapfnagel of Thrivent Financial in Blaine attended the October 25 breakfast, and heard Technical Director Brian Henneken and Principal (of North Park Elementary School) Jeff Cacek of Columbia Heights Public Schools describe the benefits of the school district's 2017 bond referendum, the first since 1996. 
 
Announcements:
  • In his "Pascal Minute", Pascal noted that he had presented the Columbia Heights School board meeting of last night, that he was named Most Valuable Player on the school's boys' soccer team this past season, and that he had enjoyed shopping this past weekend.
  • Kelli Bourgeois, Kristen Stuenkel, Craig Malm, Scott Lund, and Amy Wild attended the Lee Carlson Center's "Music for the Mind" event last Thursday. Lund was named the Center's Volunteer of the Year.
  • Kristen Stuenkel and Zac Hoang attended a thank-you banquet at MCTC last week honoring the club's STRIVE connection with the school.
  • President Wally Wysopal announced that the club's next 5:01 meeting will be held on November 22 from 5:01 to 7:00 p.m. at Sarna's in Columbia Heights.
  • Roy Goslin announced that Redeemer Lutheran Church, where member John Niewald is pastor, will host the next charter dinner. Goslin asked for four volunteers to help plan the menu and prepare the food, and noted that a maximum of 36 diners will be admitted.
  • Toni Craft mentioned that she and member Peggy Flathmann visited sole surviving charter member Bill Beery (now 102) in Rochester recently.
  • President Wysopal gave the Christmas bell-ringing dates and times: 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Nov. 29, Dec. 6, and Dec. 13 at Sam's club in Fridley.
